The Star App Reviews

60 add

terrible

they just keep making it worse. its almost as bad as their writers.

Decent paper, horrible app

Im fine with ads. A paper needs revenue, after all. But they launch immediately, and furthermore the app is slow and the navigation completely unintuitive. Read on the web instead.

The new version is pretty bad

The back button is unresponsive at times and almost never takes you back to the right place on the main page. This is not a complicated app and should be pretty easy to build without all the glitches. Really surprised by Stars lack of care for their readers.

Terrible Upgrade to a Formerly Solid App

I used to use the Star on a daily, if not hourly basis. Now I can barely spend a few minutes in this app without migrating elsewhere. Its so hard to navigate and choose articles. Bad, bad, bad, bad. They need to follow the KISS method. Keep it simple stupid! I now read one article a day whereas before it was 10-20... Just to hard to navigate

Piece of garbage

Still crap. Latest version is the worst yet. Not going to bother even entertaining a new version.

Annoying and unintuitive UI

Found an article you want to read? Open it up, read it, then try to go back to where you were before. You cant. First, swiping from the left edge of the screen, which takes you "back" to the previous screen everywhere else in iOS, doesnt work here. It brings up another article. Completely counterintuitive. Instead, to go back, you have to press the worlds tiniest back arrow in the middle top of the screen. And when you do, it still doesnt actually take you back to where you were. It forgets where you left off and so you have to start all over again. If this sounds nonsensical to you, thats because it is. Do yourself a favour and download the Globes app instead. Its actually usable, which should be a bare minimum for an app in 2016, but I guess the Star didnt get the memo.

Still has Poor Navigation

Its great to have the "Back" button back BUT clicking on it takes us back to the top of the Home page rather than back to where we were before clicking on an article. This is NOT DIFFICULT stuff!! Why does only the Toronto Star still have this issue when virtually EVERY other news app developer had figured out navigation long before now?? Are you doing it on the cheap to save money? Id rather you hire professional app developers and CHARGE us something to pay for it!

Ok app

Good it has search, but also need to be able to zoom in on pix on iPhone. Pix often too small to read so I use ur competitors apps instead.

Used to be Decent

This app used to be just fine for reading the news but has gone downhill recently. Its a news app so I dont expect or want it to be ultra flashy. The previous versions of the app seemed to understand this, and while the current version is still nice, it annoys me beyond belief when the main screen refreshes every time you back out of an article. This adds a lot of wasted time and data while waiting for the main screen to refresh every time. Still better than Star Touch though.

Good. A few tweaks needed

Quite honestly, I was OK with the iPhone optimized website. This app brings some nice features like being able to download for offline reading. It would be nice to customize your home screen with sections you read most and to have a "fast home" capability. With most apps, touching the iPhone status bar will move you to top of the page. This doesnt. Not a problem, just a quirk.

Crashes

Downloaded the new update and now it keeps crashing when I try to read an article.

Constant location check

Why the consistent and persistent location check?

OK

Better. Not all web stories available in app. Some issues with out of app content, such as editorial cartoons -- cant zoom in limited in-app browser, so many of these are a waste of time. Category strip hard to use on iphone. Fortunately, the Section view is a workaround. Sometimes the content is short. For instance, its 9:15 Sat AM, Sep 10, and theres exactly 1 story each in local, national, world. This is my paper :| I would pay for a full online newspaper.

Step up for iPhone, step down for iPad users

I really enjoyed reading the Star on my iPad but the latest version appears to have abandoned the ipad. For now I will read the Star on my iPhone and the globe and mail on my iPad.

Lost favorites/ starred articles

What happened to all of my favorites/starred articles?!?

Cheery. Fine.

Easy to use. Lots of color without being busy and distracting. I hate screens with 7 fonts and 17 things to click on and a bunch of related links embedded in the middle of the article. This is streamlined and fresh and simple.

Same stories over & over

Prior to this update you got stories that were actually pertinent to the section they were in. Now its the same story over & over. For example, a GTA story is also in the Canada section. Also, some sections dont even open or seem to contain no content. It doesnt deserve anything but one star.

Awful

Changes in the version include disruptive pop-up ads and less intuitive navigation. Ive been using this app for years, but find this version unusable.

No "Back" Button? Seriously?

Wow... this update really screwed up. Avoid! There are no significant new features, just crippled navigation.

Finally something usable

I wanted the first one to say that The Star Team has done a commendable job in fixing the navigations bug. Giving 4 Stars. Good job. Another dud from The Star Team. They introduced the back button but the page never scrolls to your original position. Absolutely pathetic development team! Whatever happened to the back button! Every time you access an article the only way to get back to the previous page is to tap the Home Page link in the menu and then scroll down to your original location. Really poor navigation design. Not sure why such a user interface was adopted.
